ID Coder Options & Types

By Keren Kipfer

ID coding machines are important to many businesses, but there is not just one type of coder to consider purchasing. Selecting the type of ID coder depends on your product and what type of coding you need to place on it. Some information about a few types of coders that you might need for your business is listed below.

First and foremost, a wide assortment of different types of coders is to be expected with different brands. You might have heard about brand names such as a domino coder, a Videojet coder, a Willet coder or perhaps a Linx printer or Imaje printer.

You also must choose the type of coder that you need within these brand names. A continuous inkjet coder or CIJ printer is something that you might need. A drop on demand printer or DOD coder might be needed. Thermal inkjet coders, binary inkjet coders and even print and apply coders can also be found.

You also need to consider whether you need to print small or large characters as there are coders that print specific sizes of coding. For instance a small water bottle might need smaller type, while a large section of PVC pipe would need larger printing. In addition, the type of material on which you are printing also affects your printer choice. Some printers work better on porous materials while others easily can print on slicker surfaces such as plastic or glass. You need a printer with extremely fast-drying ink that will not smudge or smear.

In addition to all of these requirements, it is important to note that each type of id coder, such as a Willett coder or a Domino coder needs specially formulated ink and make-up fluids. Each machine has ink created specifically for that machine, so when you purchase replacement inks, such as Domino inks or Videojet inks, you need to make sure that you are purchasing the correct ink for your specific coder.

Of course, these coders have a large price tag as they are complicated pieces of machinery. Purchasing a refurbished coder, such as a used Videojet printer or a used Altima coder or Domino printer can be a great way to save on this huge expense. Companies such as PrintJet sell refurbished coders at low prices and also formulate generic versions of Domino inks, Videojet inks and other major brands. These specially formulated inks and make-up are just like the name brands without the high price tag. Consider buying generic inks as well as looking into refurbished coding equipment.
