Creating A Fantastic Space Game

By Pattie S. Schaefer

There is a considerable amount of competition in the world of space game designers and programmers since they are all trying to make the very best games possible and to attract the most players. Today's video game market is gigantic and encompasses millions of gamers, each of whom prefer a specific type of game in a certain genre. While adults prefer games that are more intense, graphic, and realistically challenging, younger gamers tend to prefer releases that are fun and simple while still presenting enough of a challenge to keep them engaged. There is a considerable amount of time and effort put into programming and testing modern games before they are released in the hopes of becoming popular with their target audiences.

A basic space game concept, such as a spaceship game or a science fiction themed shooter game, has to be developed by a good creative design team in order to make it into a great game. Designers need to make characters that fit into their game's world and that will be fun for players to develop and watch change over the course of the game. Doing that is not always easy though, since they need to create a character that will not be too adult for children who play the game while at the same time not so childish that adult gamers become insulted or bored by the way the game progresses.

A particularly challenging part of designing a space game is making the setting for the events of the game. Science fiction themes are usually used and classics of the genre are adapted to fit new games; it is hard for designers to balance the desire to create a familiar setting that will remind gamers of other sci-fi adventures with the desire to make a totally unique game. Before the game is actually programmed, designers and artists work on making drawings and 3D images of the characters and settings they want to use in the game.

Even once a game has been designed and programmed, a lot of testing must be done to ensure that gameplay will keep gamers entertained. Many hours are spent doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

Some gamers are not familiar with the tremendous work that goes into making great space game releases. A well-designed game is a nice example of the product that can be put out when a design team works together and gets creative.
